Given below is a selected list of references to books and papers on HIM and the Role Activity Theory (RAT) that it extends and enhances.

There are other ancestors of HIM, but some key concepts come from RAT, although in HIM they are changed radically. Since the publication of "Human Interactions" in 2005, the main usage of RAT in industry has been via HIM.
